Important Information

We would like to let you know about some of the things we will be doing in Year 1 during the Autumn term and inform you of specific things that happen on particular days for your children.

Our new topic for Autumn 1 is ‘All about me”. In Autumn 2 our topic will be 'People who help us'. You will be able to find an overview of what both of these new topics consist of on the school website or by clicking on the links below.

Our 'Power of Reading' book that we will be using throughout our English lessons in Autumn 1 is 'The lonely beast' by . We will then be using 'The Jolly Postman' by Janet and Alan Alberg throughout Spring 2.

As we were awarded ‘Healthy Eating Status’ we encourage children to drink water wherever possible. Children's water bottles are to go home with the children each day to be cleaned and refilled with water, no flavoured water or juice please.

Children should bring their plastic/green school bags in everyday so that letters, homework and reading books can be put in them as well as any pieces of work the children make in class. New book bags can be purchased from the school office.

If your child suffers from asthma could a spare inhaler (labelled with their name) please be sent into school so it is available if needed, it is necessary for them to use a spacer, please supply this as well. Please inform the office of any other medicines that your child may have to take throughout the year.

What goes on during the week?

Read, Write Inc… (also known as phonics) is taught first thing every morning (Monday-Friday) so it is very important that children are on time so they do not miss out on their learning or disturb other children's learning. If the door is shut please take your child to the office.

Reading books - All children take reading books home on a weekly basis and it is their responsibility to put their reading bag in their designated box on their allocated day for staff to change. We encourage books to be brought in each day so it is available if we need to work with your child. We work in partnership with parents and carers and ask you to spend some time each evening reading with your child. Year 1 staff will use Heygarth’s Book Banding system, which they will have been assessed on by their class teacher.

Read Write Inc Reading Books - Children will also take home a Read Write Inc book which matches what group they are in. This will be sent home by the teacher they have Read Write Inc with. This may not be their class teacher.

Please could we ask you to sign and write a very small comment in your child's book when they have read to show how they got on with their reading. If it is not signed, we will assume that they have not read at home, resulting in them keeping the same book.

Other things that go on during the week:

Monday

* Class Teddy - Children or teacher will read the class teddy's diary to the class so they can find out what they have been up to when they went home with different children each week and be given to a new child. This can only happen if class teddies (Stripe and Jack) are brought back.

What are we doing this half term?

Spring 1 Term

Maths - In maths, we will be learning about Positions, Numbers to 20 including Addition and Subtraction, Counting, Comparing, Ordering and Number Patterns and Shapes and Patterns.

English - We are looking at our new book 'The Lonely Beast’. We are going to focus on using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops when writing sentences and will be introducing the children to question marks. We will be encouraging children to continue saying their sentences out loud before they write them and make sure their sentences make sense by reading them back. We will be encouraging children to use their phonic knowledge to make phonetically plausible attempts when spelling words.

Science - We will be starting our science unit on the human body. We will be discussing and labelling both inside and outside body parts. We will then be focusing on each of our senses and learning about each sense through practical and written activities.

Homework

English and Maths homework will be provided in children's homework books (which should be kept in the plastic folder provided) on Fridays and will be due in on Wednesday the following week. English and Maths homework will alternate weekly and will focus on what the children are learning that week or consolidate the previous week’s learning. A record will be kept of those children completing their homework each week and children will be rewarded with stickers on their star charts.

Reading – Please read as frequently as possible with your child and make a small comment so we know they have read and how they got on. Reading is essential for their development in all areas of English. It is their responsibility to put their book bags in their designated box on their allocated day to be changed by a member of staff.

Children may take two books home, one will be a Read Write Inc book (matching which group they are in). This will be sent home by the teacher they have Read Write Inc with. This may not be their class teacher. The other book will be from Heygarth’s Book Banding system, which they will have been assessed on by their class teacher.

Other Homework - Homework may be provided for other subjects or other skills (e.g. handwriting) if appropriate, but English and Maths should always take priority.
