Spring term 2022

‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 destroyed Pompeii, but some people must have survived. Taking this historical event as a starting point, this story tells of Tranio, an actor's son, and his friend Livia, the baker's daughter, as they witness the destruction of their beloved city.

English

We will be concentrating on different grammatical features and how they impact our writing including fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases. We will also be exploring different types of poetry and will have opportunities to learn and perform poems to an audience.

Maths

In Maths will cover fractions, graphs and time whilst also working on our fluency of the times tables up to 12 and quick recall of number bonds and number facts. We will explore further written methods to multiply and divide numbers and we will investigate Roman numerals.

Science

In science, we will be learning all about sound. We will investigate how sounds are made, how sounds travel to our ears and how different instruments can make different sounds. We will also learn about the different parts of the ear and how this allows us to hear noises. The scientists, Alexander Graham Bell and Leonardo Da Vinci will form important parts of our discussions.

Physical Education

Elm and Birch have P.E. on Monday & Wednesday

Monday - Indoor P.E. (Badminton)

Wednesday - Indoor P.E. (Gymnastics)

Curriculum

This half term our curriculum question will be, ‘Is there still evidence of the Romans in Britain today?’

We will be learning where Rome is, why the Roman army was so powerful and how they created an empire, where the Roman Empire spread, the legacy of the Roman Empire, and we will investigate which Roman inventions are still utilised today. We will design and create our own Roman mosaics and we will also start to learn how to play the ukulele from a specialist teacher.

Homework

Both English and Maths homework will be given out every Friday. Homework will be set on Google Classroom and the children will have to complete it by the following Wednesday.

Spellings will also be given every two weeks, via Google classroom and children will be expected to go on-line and complete ‘Times Table Rockstars’. Every child has their own log in.

All pupils in year 4 will have two reading books: a school reading book especially catered to their reading ability and level and a reading for pleasure book. Pupils will need to bring in both reading books and their personal reading log to school every day.
